Boon’s Calibre Travel 2022

The Yorkshire Explorer...TV, Flims & more...

Departs Monday 5th September 2022 for 5 days, half-board

This wonderful 5-day break offers something for everyone and boasts three included excursions as well as visits to places if interest on both travelling days.

The county of Yorkshire, with its diverse and beautiful landscape, is a mecca for film makers and TV producers, and our tour takes in many locations seen on the silver and small screen…the pretty villages of Otley, Goathland and Thornton-le-Dale (Emmerdale, Heartbeat, Harry Potter and Bangers & Cash); the Yorkshire Dales National Park, the market town of Skipton & picturesque Ilkley (Calendar Girls) and the floral spa town of Harrogate (Chariots of Fire & Jane Eyre). We also travel on the North York Moors Railway, most recently used in the latest Indiana Jones movie, and take a cruise on the Leeds & Liverpool Canal (commentary by TV’s Dave Spikey). In addition, we visit Derbyshire’s magnificent Chatsworth Estate and the Pork Pie & Stilton town of Melton Mobray en-route. A tour not to be missed.

Our hotel is the welcoming Best Western (PLUS) Milford, situated near Leeds and just 30 minutes from the floral town of Harrogate. Ideally located for our tour, this 3* standard venue boasts a relaxed atmosphere, excellent service and the award-wining Watermill Restaurant & Bar. The well appointed bedrooms are arranged over two floors, ground and first.

Day 1: On leaving our local boarding points, we head north, our journey taking us past the vast expanse of Rutland Water, to Melton Mobray, a historic market town celebrated for Pork Pies and Stilton Cheese. After lunch we continue on to our hotel, arriving in good time for dinner.

Day 2: Following breakfast, we make our way to the award-winning floral spa town of Harrogate, with its glorious gardens, graceful architecture and excellent shopping opportunities This afternoon, we travel into Calendar Girls Country, our route taking us via Rylstone & Cracoe (home of the real life Calendar Girls) and on to the attractive Dales market town of Grassington (one of the film locations), with its charming cobbled square. We return via idyllic Pately Bridge & pretty Nidderdale.

Day 3: Today we travel via the Emmerdale village of Otley and the picturesque town of Ilkley, in the Wharfe Valley, to the market town of Skipton “Gateway to the Dales” for a relaxing narrow boat cruise on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, with included tea & biscuits. The commentary for our one-hour long trip is provided by TV’s award-winning comedian Dave Spikey, who, with his hilarious Northern patter, brings the canal’s history alive and takes us on a whistle-stop tour of Skipton.

Day 4: After breakfast today, we make our way across country to “chocolate-box” Thornton-le-Dale, with its pretty stone cottages and sparkling stream running through the village, home to Mathewson’s Garage & Museum of TV’s “Bangers & Cash” fame. Continuing on, we head into the heart of the stunning North York Moors to visit the picturesque village of Goathland, well-known as “Aidensfield” in the TV series Heartbeat. After joining the North York Moors Steam Railway at Goathland Station, which featured in the first Harry Potter movie, we travel through the rugged, yet beautiful moorland to meet our coach at Pickering, from where we return to our hotel.

Day 5: We depart after breakfast and travel home via the beautiful Peak District National Park. Our route takes us through Bamford & Hathersage to magnificent Chatsworth House and Gardens, home of the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire, and a popular location for TV & film. Ample opportunity to explore the “Palace of the Peaks”, generally regarded as the finest palatial home in England, before we continue our journey, via Matlock Bath “Little Switzerland” and back to Essex.
