Boon’s Calibre Travel 2026 The Yorkshire Explorer…TV, Films & more… Monday 7th September 2026 for 5 days, half-board
Welcome to Yorkshire, a region rich in history, beautiful scenery and interesting attractions. Such is the diversity and richness of the county, it has been used extensively in the TV and film industry for many years, and during our three included excursions we take in some of those famous locations. Join us as we explore the area on this wonderful 5-day tour…see magnificent Castle Howard, the market town of Skipton, historic Ripon and Calendar Girls Country. We also take a ride on the Embsay & Bolton Abbey Heritage Railway and enjoy a canal boat cruise, with refreshments included. On our outward and return journeys we visit the historic castle town of Newark-on-Trent and the market town of Melton Mobray, known as the "Rural Capital of Food", famous for Stilton Cheese and Pork Pies.
Our hotel is the welcoming Best Western (PLUS) Milford, which is ideally located for this tour. This 3* standard venue boasts a relaxed atmosphere, excellent service and the award-wining Watermill Restaurant, where fresh, locally sourced ingredients are used whenever possible. The hotel’s en-suite bedrooms are well-appointed and the well-stocked bar is prefect for after dinner drinks. Bedrooms are arranged over two floors, ground and first, however, there is no lift, therefore, please request a ground floor bedroom if required.
Day 1: On leaving our local boarding points, we head northward, our journey taking us via the Great North Road to the historic town of Newark-on-Trent. Once an important centre for the wool and cloth trade, Newark is known nowadays for its picturesque ruined castle overlooking the river, large cobbled market square and a wealth of fine old buildings. After lunch, we continue on to our hotel, arriving in good time for dinner.
Day 2: After breakfast today, we head for magnificent Castle Howard, a stately home a few mile north of the city of York. Set in the breathtaking Howardian Hills, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Castle Howard is a private residence that has been home of the Carlisle branch of the Howard family for more than 300 years. Since 1952, successive generations have welcomed visitors to the House, which showcases dramatic interiors and world-renowned art collections, and to the beautiful gardens and grounds. Ample time to explore this magical estate, well known as the filming location for Brideshead Revisited, as well as other notable productions, before we return to our hotel.
Day 4: Following breakfast, we visit historic Ripon, one of the smallest cities in England. Ripon is known for its magnificent 7th century cathedral, and for its bustling, traditional market, which dates back to the 13th century. In addition, the city is rightly proud of its Hornblower Ceremony, one of the longest continuous ceremonies in the world, where every evening, a horn is blown at the four corners of the early 18th century Obelisk in the Market Place, to set the ‘watch’, and then outside the house of the Mayor. Time to explore, before we head into the Yorkshire Dales and to “Calendar Girls Country”. Our route takes us via idyllic Pately Bridge, the attractive Dales market town of Grassington (one of the film locations), with its charming cobbled square, Cracoe and Rylstone (home of the real life Calendar Girls). Our day concludes with a ride on the Embsay & Bolton Abbey Heritage Railway, seen in Emmerdale other TV & film productions, which steams through 4 miles of beautiful English countryside along the southern edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park.
Day 5: We depart after breakfast and make our way southwards. Our visit today is to the historic market town of Melton Mobray, known as the "Rural Capital of Food", famous for Stilton Cheese and Pork Pies. After lunch and shopping, we travel past the vast expanse of Rutland Water and back to the Great North Road, which takes us back to Essex, where we arrive early evening.
