Boon’s Calibre Travel 2020

Glorious Lakes & Dales

with the Settle-Carlisle Railway

Monday 15th June 2020 for 5 days, half-board

This exciting tour, based at the centrally located Hallmark Leyland Hotel, allows us the opportunity to explore no less than three neighbouring counties; Lancashire, Cumbria & Yorkshire, with the highlight being a journey on the Settle-Carlisle Railway. Our carefully planned excursions take us to the Victorian coastal resort of Lytham St Annes and the market towns of Settle and Appleby-in-Westmorland. We take circular tour of the beautiful Lake District and visit Dewlay Cheesemakers. In addition, we spend time in the beautiful Peak District and historic Lichfield en-route.

Our hotel is the popular 3* Hallmark Leyland, a modern, luxurious hotel, located just outside the Lancashire town of Leyland, and ideally situated for our tour. All bedrooms are well equipped and offer en-suite facilities; there is no lift, however, many ground floor rooms are available, including two with walk-in shower. Meals are taken in the Four Seasons Restaurant and a relaxing drink may be taken in the J28 Lounge Bar. The comprehensive leisure club boasts an indoor swimming pool.

Day 1: We depart from our local boarding points, and commence our journey to Leyland, stopping en-route in Staffordshire’s historic city of Lichfield, home to the only medieval, three-spired cathedral in the UK and birthplace of the 18th century literary figure, Dr Samuel Johnson, who spent 8 years compiling the “Dictionary of the English Language”, one of the most famous dictionaries in history.

Day 2: This morning, we visit the Dewlay Cheese Factory, a traditional family run Lancashire cheesemakers, founded in 1957, where we enjoy a guided tour, refreshments and cheese tasting. Continuing on, we travel along the Fylde Coast, through the lively town of Blackpool, to elegant Lytham St Annes, two neighbouring towns that have grown together to form one delightful seaside resort, nestled along a picturesque stretch of coastline, with well tended lawns, pretty parks, sandy beaches, a Victorian pier, historic windmill, a ‘royal’ golf course and stylish independent shops.

Day 3: Today’s excursion takes us northward into the Lake District National Park where make a circular tour of the southern lakes. Our first stop is the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway, where we visit the station café for refreshments. Continuing alongside Coniston Water, inspiration for the Swallows & Amazons stories and site of Campbell’s ill-fated water speed attempt, we reach the quaint medieval village of Hawkshead, with its traditional Lakeland cottages, narrow streets, tea shops and inns. We return along the eastern shore of Lake Windermere and the resort of Bowness, Cumbria’s most popular destination and home to many attractions, speciality shops and cafes.

Day 4: After breakfast today, we make our way to Settle, a bustling, historic North Yorkshire market town, with a wealth of independent shops, cafés, inns and restaurants, situated at the gateway to Upper Ribblesdale and in sight of the wild and lovely Forest of Bowland. Time to explore, before we board the world famous Settle-Carlisle Railway, for a scenic journey across the Dales and the impressive, 24-arch Ribble Viaduct. We re-join our coach at ancient Appleby-in-Westmorland, in the Eden Valley, a market town full of old world charm, with a medieval castle, 16th century Moot Hall and Boroughgate, its picturesque main street, described as 'one of the finest in England'.

Day 5: On leaving our hotel we make our way homeward, our journey taking us via the pretty villages and beautiful scenery of the Peak District National Park.
