Boon’s Calibre Travel 2024

The Splendours of North Wales

including the Snowdon Mountain Railway

Monday 9th September 2024 for 5 days, half-board

This magical 5- day tour takes in the outstanding beauty of North Wales and boasts three carefully planned excursions, with something to suit all tastes. Highlights include, a magical canal cruise across the Thomas Telford Aqueduct, a ride on the spectacular Snowdon Mountain Railway to the summit of Wales’ highest peak, a visit to the glorious Bodnant Gardens, and time to relax in everyone’s favourite resort, Llandudno. In addition, we visit the pretty Welsh villages of Llanberis and Llangollen and, on our travelling days, we have lunchtime visits to elegant Royal Leamington Spa and the historic market town of Ludlow.

Our hotel for this tour is the popular, independently run 3* standard Beaufort Park, a modern building situated in a semi-rural setting near the Welsh border town of Mold. All en-suite bedrooms are well appointed and are situated on the ground and first floors. There is no lift, therefore, if you are unable to manage a flight of stairs, please request a ground floor bedroom when booking. On arrival at the hotel we will be greeted with a welcome cup of tea or coffee and traditional Bara Birth.

Day 1: On leaving our local boarding points, we make our way to our hotel in North Wales, stopping en-route in Royal Leamington Spa, a fashionable town with Georgian & Victorian architecture, tree lined avenues and squares, and glorious gardens. After lunch, we continue on to the Beaufort Park, where porters take care of our luggage, while we enjoy welcome refreshments.

Day 2: Today we visit the attractive Welsh town of Llangollen, situated in the beautiful Dee Valley, with its variety of attractions, where we depart for a unique canal cruise, which takes us across the famous Pontcysyllte aqueduct, a magnificent feat of engineering, built by Thomas Telford in 1805. After an enjoyable day, we return to our hotel by way of the winding Horseshoe pass.

Day 3: Today’s excursion takes us into the heart of the Snowdonia National Park, our route taking us via Betws-y-Coed, Capel Curig and the Pass of Llanberis to the beautiful village of Llanberis, with its stunning lakeside location at the foot of Mount Snowdon. From here we join the Snowdon Mountain Railway, for a fabulous 2½ hour round trip to the summit of Mount Snowdon, Wales’ highest peak. Depending on the train time there will be free time either before, or afterwards, to explore Llanberis, with its many attractions.

Day 4: Following breakfast, we visit the world renowned Bodnant Garden, an 80-acre garden, owned by the National Trust, set above the River Conwy. Considered to be one of the great gardens of the world, the magnificent flowering plants and shrubs, impressive views, and abundant running water make a visit well worthwhile. Continuing on, we make our way along the Vale of Conwy, to the Victorian resort of Llandudno, a beautiful seaside town with a promenade, pier, superb beaches, elegant hotels, interesting shops, and panoramic views from the Great Orme, at the summit of its striking headland. On leaving Llandudno we return to our hotel for dinner. Admission to Bodnant Garden is extra (Free for NT members)

Day 5: We leave our hotel soon after breakfast, and make our way home, stopping en-route in the market town of Ludlow, arguably one of the finest historic towns in England, with its wealth of beautiful period buildings and dramatic medieval castle, perched high on a cliff. Time for sightseeing and lunch, before we make our way home to Essex.
