Boon’s Calibre Travel 2020

Easter 2020…the Splendours of

Snowdonia & North Wales

Friday 10th April 2020 for 4 days, half-board

Our spectacular Easter break for 2020 is based in Llanberis, in the heart of the Snowdonia National Park, a village surrounded by breathtaking scenery and boasting a multitude of attractions. During our tour we visit the castle town of Caernarfon, the beautiful Isle of Anglesey, captivating Beaumaris, pretty Betws-y-Coed, Darwin’s Shrewsbury and the cathedral city of Lichfield. There will be free time in lakeside Llanberis and a ride through the spectacular Snowdonia National Park on the Ffestiniog Railway.

The welcoming 3* Royal Victoria Hotel sits within 30 acres of gardens, cradled between the Welsh mountains and two lakes, Llyn Padarn & Lyn Peris, in the attractive village of Llanberis. With its unique location, at the foot of Mount Snowdon (the highest mountain in England & Wales), it’s perfectly suited for our tour. The tastefully furnished en-suite bedrooms are well equipped, some have walk-in showers, and there is a lift.  Entertainment will be provided on one evening, and, as an added bonus, we enjoy an included lunch on Easter Sunday.

Day 1: We depart from our local boarding points, and commence our journey to Llanberis, stopping en-route in Staffordshire’s historic city of Lichfield, home to the only medieval, three-spired cathedral in the UK and birthplace of the 18th century literary figure, Dr Samuel Johnson, who spent 8 years compiling the “Dictionary of the English Language”, one of the most famous dictionaries in history.

Day 2: This morning we visit Caernarfon, home to Wales’ most famous castle, the mighty 13th century Caernarfon Castle, site of the investiture of the Prince of Wales in 1969. Time to explore the narrow streets and stylish re-developed waterfront, before we make our way to Porthmadog Station to join the Ffestiniog Railway. The Ffestiniog Railway travels 13½ miles from Porthmadog Harbour to the slate-quarrying town of Blaenau Ffestiniog, climbing over 700ft and travelling through magnificent forests, past lakes & waterfalls and round horseshoe bends, clinging to the side of the mountain and even tunnelling through it. After a spectacular journey, we return to our hotel via the bustling mountain village of Betws-y-Coed and the Pass of Llanberis.

Day 3: After breakfast this morning, we head for the beautiful Isle of Anglesey, to visit the captivating, Victorian seaside town of Beaumaris, with its charming streets, splendid harbour, fine 13th century moated castle and magnificent views across the Menai Strait. We return to our hotel for Sunday lunch, followed by an afternoon at leisure in Llanberis. The village of Llanberis, with its lakeside location at the foot of Mount Snowdon, is home to a number of attractions; the Llanberis Lake Railway, Padarn Country Park, the National Slate Mining Museum, Electric Mountain, Dolbadarn Castle and the Snowdon Mountain Railway*.

Day 4: We leave our hotel soon after breakfast, and make our way home, stopping en-route in historic Shrewsbury, the county town of Shropshire, nestling within a great loop of the River Severn, with its Tudor centre, lined with half-timbered houses, famous as the birthplace of Charles Darwin.

Includes: 3 nights half-board (dinner, bed & breakfast) in en-suite bedrooms, lift, porterage, 2 included excursions with visits on outward & return journeys, evening entertainment, Sunday lunch. Fare for Ffestiniog Railway

*Snowdon Mountain Railway. The Snowdon Mountain Railway departs from Llanberis and the station is very close to our hotel. For those who wish to take a ride on the Snowdon Mountain Railway, we would suggest that you pre-book, either on-line or by telephone. Trains run every 30 minutes from 9am and the round trip takes 2hrs. Note: in April, the train only travels ¾ of the way up the mountain. Please ask us for details when booking this tour.
