Boon’s Calibre Travel 2026 Treasures of Norfolk Departs Saturday 27th June 2026 for 3 days, half-board
By popular demand we return to the splendid 4* Knights Hill. A venue loved by our clients, the welcoming Knights Hill has been our “Thursford” overnight hotel for many years. Following our successful visit last summer, several of you asked to return, and we are pleased to have secured this two night stay for 2026. During our 3-day tour we visit some of Norfolk’s great attractions…the historic Holkham Estate, the traditional resort of Hunstanton and the villages of Wroxham & Hoveton St John. In addition, we take a ride on the Bure Valley Steam Railway and enjoy a cruise on the Norfolk Broads on-board the Mississippi paddle boat, Southern Comfort. Our lunch stop on our outward journey is the city of Ely, with its magnificent cathedral and bustling market
The 4* Knights Hill Hotel and Spa, a member of the Best Western Signature Collection, is the wonderful hotel that we’ve used for our Thursford mini-breaks for many years. Sitting in 11 acres of grounds and gardens, this former hunting lodge boasts spacious accommodation, with smartly decorated bedrooms and elegant public areas. Bedrooms are spread across two floors, ground and first, all have en-suite facilities. For relaxation, there is an indoor swimming pool.
Saturday 27th: On leaving our local boarding points, we make our way to Norfolk. Our lunchtime visit is the historic city of Ely, full of charm and beauty, and home to one of the most magnificent cathedrals in England. It’s market day today, therefore there will be plenty to see and do. On leaving Ely we complete our journey to the Knights Hill Hotel, where porters take care of our luggage, while we settle into our rooms. We all meet again for our delicious evening meal.
Sunday 28th: Following breakfast, we make our way to the historic Holkham Estate, beautifully situated on the North Norfolk Coast and surrounded by rolling parkland. The magnificent eighteenth-century Palladian hall is owned by the Earls of Leicester, who take great pride in welcoming visitors to their home and sharing its treasures. Within the state rooms there are superb collections of ancient statuary, original furniture, tapestries and paintings by Rubens, Van Dyck, Gaspar Poussin and Gainsborough to be enjoyed and admired. In addition, to the hall, we can visit the fascinating Holkham Stories Experience, to find out about the estate’s 400-year past, living present and innovative future, and, finally, we have the opportunity to enjoy the colourful plantings and scents in the historic walled garden, treat ourselves to something tasty in the Courtyard Café, and perhaps purchase a unique souvenir from the gift shop, which showcases the work of local artisan suppliers. We return to our hotel along the coast road, stopping in the traditional seaside town of Hunstanton, the only west facing resort on the east coast of England. The town is in two distinct parts…Hunstanton, boasts an elegant old Victorian town, the Esplanade Gardens, a large sandy beach, a theatre and the usual seaside attractions. While Old Hunstanton has more of a village feel, with its beach (including rock pools) backed by famous red and white striped cliffs. On leaving Hunstanton, we head back to our hotel for dinner.
Monday 29th: After breakfast today, we make our way to the ancient market town of Aylsham, where we board the Bure Valley Steam Railway, for a scenic 9 mile ride to the pretty village of Wroxham. Wroxham & Hoveton St John, are connected villages sitting astride the River Bure. Collectively known as Wroxham “capital of the Norfolk Broads”, the two villages boast a multitude of shops, attractions and eating places, including the famous Roy’s department store. Time for lunch and shopping before we travel to nearby Horning, where we board the 100-seat, double-deck, Mississippi paddle boat, Southern Comfort for a lovely circular tour along the Bure, to Ranworth Broad and back. Throughout the trip there will be an informative commentary as we sail past thatched cottages, windmills & Norfolk Reed beds. After a lovely day, we return home to Essex.
