Boon’s Calibre Travel 2024

Delightful Dorset…Coast & Country

Departs Monday 14th October 2024 for 5 days half board

Join us for a lovely 5-day break based in the South Coast's premier resort, Bournemouth “Queen of the South Coast”; a perfect location from which to explore the delightful county of Dorset, an area immortalised by one of its most famous residents, the Victorian novelist & poet, Thomas Hardy. Our three included excursions offer plenty of variety; with visits to historic towns, traditional seaside resorts, stunning Athelhampton House & Gardens and romantic Highcliffe Castle. We take a nostalgic journey on the Swanage Steam Railway, and there will be the opportunity to explore the cathedral city of Winchester and the historic castle town of Arundel.

Located on the prestigious East Cliff, overlooking the bay, Bournemouth’s 4* Cumberland is just a short stroll from the beach and the vibrant town centre. This iconic Art Deco hotel boasts well-appointed public areas, stylish en-suite bedrooms, some with stunning sea views, and a restaurant serving delicious meals made from locally sourced produce. There is a lift and some rooms have a walk-in shower. Guests may use the indoor swimming pool in the neighbouring sister hotel.

Day 1: We depart from our local boarding points, and make our way southward, stopping en-route at the popular Polhill Garden Centre and the historic city of Winchester, with its fine shopping centre, magnificent Cathedral, and Great Hall, which for over 700 years has housed the mysterious King Arthur's Round Table. Our journey continues through the beautiful New Forest and on to our hotel, where we enjoy welcome refreshments, while porters take care of our luggage.

Day 2: This morning, we visit the Georgian market town of Lymington, situated on the southern edge of the New Forest. A world renowned sailing resort, with two large marinas, the also town boasts a number of interesting independent shops, cafes and the Old Town Quay, which is still used by commercial fishing boats. We spend the afternoon at Highcliffe Castle, a Grade I listed building, described as the most important surviving house of the Romantic and Picturesque style of architecture. Once lavishly furnished in the 18th century French style, its rich interiors were destroyed by two fires during the 1960s. Brought back to life by a huge repair and conservation programme in the 1990s, the mansion, once home to Harry Gordon Selfridge, who founded the London based department store, is well worth a visit (admission included)

Day 3:  Today’s excursion take us to the Isle of Purbeck, where we board the Swanage Steam Railway (single fare included) for a nostalgic journey past the striking ruins of Corfe Castle, through the countryside to the Victorian seaside resort of Swanage, at the eastern edge of the world famous Jurassic Coast. We return to our hotel for time at leisure in Bournemouth, with its award-winning beaches, gardens and vibrant centre.

Day 4: After breakfast today we spend some time in the floral, market town of Wimborne Minster, beautifully situated on the banks of the rivers Stour and Allen, with its majestic Minster Church, and pretty streets and courtyards. Continuing on, we visit one of Dorset's many treasures, Athelhampton House & Gardens, a stunning 15th century house, bursting with fascinating history, surrounded by tranquil formal gardens and bounded by the River Piddle (admission included)

Day 5: On leaving our hotel we make our way home, our route taking us, once again through the beautiful New Forest, to historic Arundel, a uniquely attractive town, with a Georgian & Victorian centre, situated on the River Arun, and overlooked by its towering castle and impressive cathedral. On leaving Arundel, we complete our return journey, arriving home in Essex early evening.
