Treasures of Norfolk…

Coast & Country

Departs Friday 1st July 2022 for 4 days, half-board

The county of Norfolk is such a splendid region that it deserves to explored in depth, and on this lovely tour, we hope to achieve just that. For your delight, we have included two excursions around the area, taking in the coastal resort of Sheringham, the historic town of Holt, the heritage railway known as the “Poppy Line”, pretty Wroxham and the Mississippi paddle boat “Southern Comfort”. To further enhance your enjoyment, and to ensure your holiday is a genuine four day break, we visit the Wisbech Rose Fair and the unique Bressingham Steam Museum & Gardens en-route.

The AA 4* Knights Hill Hotel and Spa, a member of the Best Western Signature Collection, is the wonderful hotel that we’ve used for our Thursford mini-breaks for many years. Sitting in 11 acres of grounds and gardens, this former hunting lodge boasts spacious accommodation, with smartly decorated bedrooms and elegant public areas.  Bedrooms are spread across two floors, ground and first, all have en-suite facilities and there is one adapted for the disabled. For relaxation, there is an indoor swimming pool.

Day 1: On leaving our local boarding points, we make our way to Norfolk, stopping en-route in the market town of Wisbech, Capital of the Fens, with its elegant Georgian architecture. Our visit coincides with the Wisbech Rose Fair, one of the finest flower festivals in England.  Ample time to take lunch, and view the stunning floral displays, before we complete our journey to the Knights Hill Hotel, where porters take care of our luggage, while we settle into our rooms.

Day 2: Today, we make our way to historic, Georgian Holt, a town rebuilt following a fire in 1708, with its many cafes, boutiques, galleries, bookshops and antique shops, tucked away in alleyways and courtyards. From Holt we take the North Norfolk Railway (fare included), known locally as 'The Poppy Line', for a 5 mile journey though the countryside to the traditional market town of Sheringham, “jewel of the north Norfolk coast”, where there will be time to take lunch and to explore the quaint town and seafront.

Day 3: Our excursion today, takes us to Wroxham & Hoveton St John, connected villages sitting astride the River Bure. Collectively known as Wroxham “capital of the Norfolk Broads”, the two villages boast a multitude of shops, attractions and eating places, including the famous Roy’s department store. Continuing on, we arrive at nearby Horning, where we board the 100-seat, double-deck, Mississippi paddle boat, Southern Comfort for a lovely circular tour along the Bure. Throughout the trip there will be an informative commentary as we sail past thatched cottages, windmills & Norfolk Reed beds.

Day4: On leaving our hotel, we head for home, stopping en-route at the unique Bressingham Steam Museum & Gardens. The gardens, beautiful in all seasons, are renowned worldwide for their horticultural excellence, and the steam museum & working railway provides interest for all ages. An additional attraction is the Dads Army Exhibition, with photos, sets, vehicles & original props from the popular TV series.
