Victorian Torquay & the Cream of South Devon

Departs Monday 17th June 2024 for 5 days, half-board

A charming five-day break, taking in South Devon’s many treasures, based in beautiful Torquay, one of the West Country’s principal resorts, with its magnificent bay, elegant Victorian villas, iconic palm trees, busy harbour, extensive shopping areas and amazing sea views. Our tour includes three exciting excursions, encompassing a wide variety of places of interest, with visits to the colourful fishing port of Brixham, the Regency resort of Sidmouth, the pretty village of Widecome-in-the Moor, the rugged Dartmoor National Park, the tranquil Donkey Sanctuary, historic Totnes and the beautiful resort of Babbacombe. In addition, we spend time in the historic cities of Bath and Dorchester en-route.

Our hotel is the elegant AA 3* Headland, superbly situated in the resort of Torquay, in the centre of the “English Riviera”. Set in two acres of grounds, with panoramic views across stunning Tor Bay, the hotel, formally a grand private residence for the Russian Royal family, boasts stylish public areas, well-appointed en-suite bedrooms and a comprehensive leisure centre. There is a lift, accessible bedrooms, ground floor rooms and some rooms have a walk-in shower.

Day 1: We depart from our local boarding points and head for the Southwest, stopping en-route in the beautiful city of Bath, where hot springs, Roman Baths, a splendid Abbey & Georgian stone crescents have attracted visitors for centuries. After lunch, we continue our journey to Torquay, arriving at the Headland in good time for dinner.

Day 2: Today, we head into the heart of rugged Dartmoor, an atmospheric National Park, with stunning views, awe inspiring granite tors, rugged, wide open spaces and freely roaming Dartmoor ponies. We visit the beautiful village of Widecome-in-the Moor, of Uncle Tom Cobley & Widecome Fair fame; equally famous for its 14th century church of St Pancras, known as the “Cathedral of the Moor”. We return to our hotel via the historic, market town of Totnes, beautifully situated at the head of the Dart Estuary. Totnes boasts a Norman castle and a wealth of listed buildings, including its 17th century Guildhall, and its narrow streets are home to a variety of independent shops and a Tuesday market.

Day 3: Following a leisurely breakfast, we are free to enjoy Victorian, Torquay, one of the West Country’s principal resorts, with its magnificent bay, elegant Victorian villas, iconic palm trees, busy harbour, extensive shopping areas and amazing sea views. Alternatively, join our morning excursion to neighbouring Babbacombe, a smaller resort often described as “Torbay’s Jewel in the Crown”, boasting stunning coastal views across Lyme Bay, sandy beaches, a promenade, shops and restaurants, a fascinating model village and a funicular cliff railway. This afternoon we visit the lively, colourful fishing port of Brixham, home to a full size replica of Drake’s ship, the Golden Hind.

Day 4: After breakfast today, we visit the popular Sidmouth Donkey Sanctuary (free entry), where these gentle, hardworking creatures are loved and cared for in tranquil surroundings. As well as the “residents”, who enjoy visitors’ attention, there is a gift shop and cafe, whose profits support the charity’s work in caring Donkeys in the UK and throughout the world. We spend ther remainder of the day in Regency Sidmouth, a quiet, unspoilt seaside resort, full of character, boasting beautiful parks, beaches, small shops and a wealth of interesting architecture, all nestling beneath majestic red cliffs in the glorious Sid Valley. We return along the coast road, via Teignmouth and Dawlish, to our hotel
