Boon’s Calibre Travel 2025 West Country Wonders Departs Friday 30th May 2025 for 4 days, half-board
A charming four-day break, taking in South Devon’s many treasures, based in beautiful Torquay, one of the West Country’s principal resorts, with its magnificent bay, elegant Victorian villas, iconic palm trees, busy harbour, extensive shopping areas and amazing sea views.
Our tour includes two exciting excursions, encompassing a wide variety of places of interest, with visits to the colourful port of Dartmouth, picture-postcard Salcombe, the Regency resort of Sidmouth and beautiful Bicton Park Botanical Garden. In addition, we spend time in historic Chippenham and the beautiful city of Wells on our outward & return journeys. There will also be the opportunity to enjoy the resort of Paignton and to explore the area using the Paignton to Dartmouth Steam Railway and Riverboat Cruises – information will be provided (train/boat fares extra). For those who would like to spend time in Torquay, the hotel offer daily complementary taxi service into the town.
Our hotel, one of clients favourites, is the elegant AA 3* Headland, superbly situated in the resort of Torquay, in the centre of the “English Riviera”. Set in two acres of grounds, with panoramic views across stunning Tor Bay, the hotel, formally a grand private residence for the Russian Royal family, boasts stylish public areas, well-appointed en-suite bedrooms and a comprehensive leisure centre. There is a lift, accessible bedrooms, ground floor rooms and some rooms have a walk-in shower. Headland Hotel & Spa, Torquay, Devon, TQ1 2EF Tel: 01803-295 666
Day 1: We depart from our local boarding points and head for the Southwest, stopping en-route in historic Chippenham, one of the West Country’s most vibrant towns. Nestled on the banks of the River Avon, this Wiltshire town boasts an abundance of shopping opportunities, including a Friday street market, the Chippenham Museum and a wealth of beautifully maintained parks and open spaces. After lunch, we continue our journey to Torquay, arriving at the Headland in good time for dinner.
Day 2: After breakfast today, we head eastward along the coast road, via Teignmouth and Dawlish, to Regency Sidmouth, a quiet, unspoilt seaside resort, full of character, boasting beautiful parks, beaches, small shops and a wealth of interesting architecture, all nestling beneath majestic red cliffs in the glorious Sid Valley. Our afternoon visit is to Bicton Park Botanical Gardens, which are described as "a delight for gardeners" and boast many rare and beautiful species collected from around the world. Attractions include the Palm, Tropical, Arid and Temperate Houses, as well as an arboretum, a countryside museum and the Bicton Woodland Railway. Refreshments may be enjoyed in the on-site café which overlooks the stunning 300-year-old Italian Garden.
Day 3: Following a leisurely breakfast, we make our way to the delightful resort of Paignton where we have the opportunity to spend the day enjoying the golden beaches, promenade, gardens, picturesque harbour and perhaps the spectacular Paignton to Dartmouth Steam Railway. Alternatively, stay with the coach and join us in Devon’s picturesque South Hams Region, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, noted for its beautiful landscape, quality local food, culture and scenic beaches. We pass through the traditional English market town of Kingsbridge, with its attractive streets, before continuing on to Devon’s most Southerly town, picture-postcard Salcombe, a vibrant coastal resort with an attractive harbour and smuggling past. Ample time for shopping and to enjoy the fine food and drink on offer (don’t forget to try some delicious Salcombe Dairy Ice-cream or the award winning Salcombe Gin) before we visit historic Dartmouth, situated on the beautiful Dart estuary; an attractive town, with ancient narrow streets, famous for its seafaring
Day 4: On leaving our hotel we head for historic Wells, the smallest city in England, due to the presence of its beautiful Cathedral. Situated in Somerset’s Mendip Hills, Wells gained its name from the springs (or wells) that originate on the grounds of its magnificent, moated Bishop’s Palace. Time to take lunch and to explore this unique city before we return to Essex, with comfort stops en-route.
Includes: 3 nights half-board (dinner, bed & breakfast) in en-suite bedrooms, lift, ground floor rooms, adapted rooms, walk-in showers, leisure centre. 2 excursions and visits on outward & return journeys.
