Boon’s Calibre Travel 2022

Easter 2022…

Steam, Cream & the Brecon Beacons

Departs Friday 15th April 2022 for 4 days, half-board

This lovely Easter break for 2022 takes us to a wonderful and varied region of South Wales. Our base for the 3 nights is a modern, welcoming 4* Mercure hotel (see below) and our two included excursions take in some of the fine features and attractions of the area. The glorious Brecon Beacons National Park, Swansea’s National Waterfront Museum and the picture-postcard Mumbles all feature in our programme, along with a ride on the Brecon Beacons Mountain Railway, often described as one of the “Best Little Trains of Wales”. In addition, we visit St Fagan’s open-air National History Museum & the mellow Cotswolds on our outward & return journeys.

Our hotel is the welcoming 4* standard Mercure, which is located 5 miles outside Cardiff’s vibrant city centre. The spacious, modern en-suite accommodation is air-conditioned, newly refurbished and is well equipped for today’s traveller. There are a number of ground floor bedrooms available (two are adapted for the disabled) and there are also bedrooms with walk-in showers. Upper rooms are accessed via a lift. There is also a fitness center for use of hotel guests. The restaurant serves a comprehensive buffet breakfast and delicious three course evening meals, with tea/coffee to follow. In addition, our Easter package also includes cream tea on arrival and bingo/quiz on one evening

Day 1: We depart from our local boarding points and commence our journey to Wales, our route taking us via the rolling hills of the mellow Cotwolds, where we make a stop for lunch in one of the pretty villages built from distinctive local yellow limestone. After lunch, we continue on to our hotel, where we enjoy a welcome cream tea, while porters take care of our luggage.

Day 2: After breakfast today, we make our way to Pant, where we board the Brecon Beacons Mountain Railway, often described as one of the “Best Little Trains of Wales”, for a 90 minute return journey high up into the beautiful Brecon Beacons National Park. Our route takes us past the gorge of the Taf Fechan River and alongside the vast expanse of the Ponsticill Reservoir. The train continues to climb as we pass the upper Pentwyn Reservoir, before finally reaching Torpantau, 400m above sea level. We return to Pant Station, where there will be time to visit the café and gift shop. This afternoon we take a scenic coach tour through the Brecon Beacons NP, to enjoy its magnificent beauty from different perspective.

Day 3:Today we head westward to visit the fascinating National Waterfront Museum (free entry), situated in Swansea’s Maritime Quarter, where we learn the story of industry and innovation in Wales through the many marvellous exhibits. We then travel round the great sweep of Swansea Bay to picture-postcard Mumbles, an attractive, traditional seaside resort beautifully located at the gateway to the Gower Peninsular, the UK’s first designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Nicknamed the “Monaco of Wales” due to its links to celebrities, such as Catherine Zeta-Jones and Michael Douglas, Mumbles is full of character and charm and boasts a glorious sandy beach, medieval castle, an 18th century lighthouse and Victorian pier. In addition, there are small specialist shops, fine eating places and, most famously “welsh-Italian” ice cream parlours selling arguably the worlds' best ice cream. Ample time to explore, take lunch and enjoy the spectacular views across the bay before we return to our hotel.

Day 4: We depart from our hotel and commence our journey home, however, before leaving Wales, we visit St Fagan’s National History Museum, standing in the grounds of the magnificent St Fagan’s Castle. One of Europe's foremost open–air museums, and Wales’ most popular heritage attraction, St Fagan’s boasts over forty original buildings from different historical periods re-erected in the 100-acre parkland (free entry). On leaving St Fagans we continue our journey to Essex, with suitable stops en-route
