 West Country Wonders

includes evening entertainment & festive treats

Departs Friday 8th November 2024 for 4 days, half-board

Join us for this charming four-day pre-Christmas break, based in beautiful Torquay, one of the West Country’s principal resorts, with its magnificent bay, elegant Victorian villas, iconic palm trees, busy harbour, extensive shopping areas and amazing sea views. Our tour boasts two excursions, taking in some of South Devon’s many treasures, with visits to the serene Buckfast Abbey, the rugged Dartmoor National Park, Widecome-in-the Moor (of Uncle Tom Cobley & Widecome Fair fame), beautiful, seafaring Dartmouth, and the fascinating House of Marbles. In addition, our travelling days include the delightful Wiltshire town of Bradford-on-Avon and historic Wells, the smallest city in England.

To make our visit to the West Country even more special, our lovely hotel have organised a programme of evening entertainment and festive treats…they’ve even arranged an early visit from Santa!!

Our hotel is the elegant AA 3* Headland, superbly situated in the resort of Torquay, in the centre of the “English Riviera”. Set in two acres of grounds, with panoramic views across stunning Tor Bay, the hotel, formally a grand private residence for the Russian Royal family, boasts stylish public areas, well-appointed en-suite bedrooms and a comprehensive leisure centre. There is a lift, accessible bedrooms, ground floor rooms and some rooms have a walk-in shower.

Headland Hotel & Spa, Torquay, Devon, TQ1 2EF Tel: 01803-295 666

Day 1: We depart from our local boarding points and head for the Southwest, stopping en-route in the charming, vibrant Wilshire town of Bradford-on-Avon, which boasts a wealth of architectural treasures and delightful, narrow streets, lined with attractive shops and cafes. On arrival at the Headland Hotel, we are welcomed with hot drinks and mince pies. After settling into our rooms, we enjoy a mulled wine reception in the Gallery Lounge, which is followed by dinner in the restaurant.

Day 2: After today’s breakfast, we visit Buckfastleigh, and the peace and serenity of Buckfast Abbey*, situated in a wooded valley in the edge of the Dartmoor National Park. Time to enjoy the magnificent Abbey Church, herb gardens, visitor centre, exhibition,  shops and café, before visiting historic Dartmouth, situated on the beautiful Dart estuary. An attractive town, with ancient narrow streets, famous for its seafaring history, Dartmouth is often used as a film set.

This evening’s meal will be a Traditional Christmas dinner, followed by entertainment in the lounge.

*The Abbey Church, shops, café & gardens are free entry. There is a charge for the Monastic Way Exhibition (included)

Day 3: Following breakfast today, we head into the heart of rugged Dartmoor, an atmospheric National Park, with stunning views, awe inspiring granite tors, rugged, wide open spaces and freely roaming Dartmoor ponies. We visit the beautiful village of Widecome-in-the Moor, of Uncle Tom Cobley & Widecome Fair fame; equally famous for its 14th century church of St Pancras, known as the “Cathedral of the Moor. We return to our hotel via the fascinating House of Marbles (free entry), an award-winning working glass and games factory, set in a historic pottery, which boasts interesting museums, a restaurant and a shop selling a wide variety of gifts and items for the home. On arrival back in Torquay, we enjoy a quiz and festive treats, before dinner in the restaurant. This evening we toast the “New Year” with a glass of sparking cassis, followed by entertainment & Auld Lang Syne before bedtime.

Day 4: On leaving our hotel, we make our way homeward, stopping en-route for refreshments and lunch. Our lunchtime visit is to historic Wells, the smallest city in England, with its beautiful cathedral and moated Bishops Palace. We arrive home early evening
