Boon’s Calibre Travel 2023

 A Welsh Panorama…Lakes, Crystal & Steam

Monday 28th August 2023 for 5 days, half-board

Our wonderful tour is based at the highest rated hotel in in Mid-Wales, the excellent 4* Metropole, centrally located in the spa town of Llandrindod Wells. On our three included excursions we spend time in the Victorian seaside resort of Aberystwyth and the historic Market town of Rhayader; we travel through the rugged Brecon Beacons and take a ride on one of the “Best Little Trains of Wales, the Brecon Beacons Mountain Railway; we tour the magnificent Elan Valley Reservoirs and enjoy a visit to Welsh Royal Crystal, Wales' only manufacturer of Hand Made Lead Crystal. There will be time at leisure in our resort, and on our travelling days, we explore the “Black & White” towns and villages of the Welsh Marshes, with visits to historic Ludlow, and the riverside “Mustard” town of Tewkesbury.

The beautiful 'Heart of Wales' provides a tranquil setting for the welcoming 4* Metropole. Owned by the Baird-Murray family for over 100 years, this beautiful, Victorian hotel is centrally located in the historic spa town of Llandrindod Wells, and is always a popular choice with our clients. All tastefully decorated en-suite bedrooms are furnished to a high standard and are equipped with colour TV, telephone, tea/coffee tray etc. There are lifts to all floors and two bedrooms are adapted for the disabled. The Spa, located in a Victorian-style conservatory, boasts a magnificent indoor pool.

Day 1: We depart from our local boarding points, and make our way through the mellow Cotswolds to the medieval riverside town of Tewkesbury, with its historic centre and magnificent abbey. Time to explore the network of alleyways in the old town, and to wander along the fine high street, perhaps try some of the world famous Tewkesbury Mustard, before we travel via Ledbury, one of the finest black & white towns in the country, into Wales, where we arrive at our hotel in good time for dinner.

Day 2: After breakfast today, we take a scenic coach tour through the rugged Brecon Beacons to Pant, where we board the Brecon Beacons Mountain Railway. Often described as one of the “Best Little Trains of Wales”, this heritage line takes us on a 90 minute return journey high up into the beautiful National Park, where we can enjoy its magnificent beauty from different perspective. Our route takes us past the gorge of the Taf Fechan River and alongside the vast expanse of the Ponsticill Reservoir. The train continues to climb as we pass the upper Pentwyn Reservoir, before finally reaching Torpantau, 400m above sea level. We return to Pant Station, where there will be time to visit the café and gift shop.

Day 3: Today’s excursion takes us via Llangurig to Devils Bridge, with its famous waterfall and three bridges, the earliest of which was reputedly built by the Devil himself!  Continuing on, we reach Aberystwyth, the largest resort on the west coast of Wales. The town has a grand Victorian promenade, a large harbour, which shelters fleets of leisure craft, and a ruined castle built in 1277. We return to our hotel for some time at leisure in our hotel and the spa town of Llandrindod Wells, with its elegant buildings and wide streets. Surrounded by some of the most beautiful countryside in Wales, Llandrindod became a prosperous resort in Victorian times due to the arrival of the railway and the Victorian’s passion for spas. Today, visitors can still “take the waters” in the Rock Park Spa which is situated close to the 19th century Pump Room.

Day 4: This morning, we enjoy a factory tour and a fascinating demonstration of glass cutting at Welsh Royal Crystal, Wales' only manufacturer of Hand Made Lead Crystal. We also have the opportunity to visit the well-stocked shop, with Welsh Royal Crystal at bargain prices, before we head into the Cambrian Mountains, via Rhayader, a busy market town on the banks of the River Wye. This afternoon we take a tour, by coach, of the wonderful Elan Valley Reservoirs, the oldest of Mid-Wales’ many man-made lakes, with their magnificent cascading dams,  Ample time to view the spectacular scenery, and to visit the interesting visitor centre and tea rooms, before we return to our hotel.

Day 5: On leaving our hotel, our scenic return journey takes us via the “Black & White” villages of the Welsh Marches. We travel through the tiny, characterful town of Kington, the quintessentially English village of Pembridge and the former wool town of Leominster to arrive at the market town of Ludlow, arguably one of the finest historic towns in England, with its wealth of beautiful period buildings and dramatic medieval castle, perched high on a cliff. Time for sightseeing and lunch, before we make our way home to Essex.
