Boon’s Calibre Travel 2025

Lights, Camera, Action!!!

Downton Abbey, Dibley & more

Departs Friday 2nd May 2025 for 3 days, half-board

New for 2025, this feature-packed TV locations tour has something for everyone…on our outward journey we visit the picturesque riverside town of Henley, “Queen of the Thames”, one of the most beautiful towns in England (location for some Midsomer Murders!!), and the pretty village of Turville, with its links to the Vicar of Dibley, Goodnight Mr. Tom and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. On our second day, we pay an extended visit to the fabulous Highclere Castle, where the popular period drama Downton Abbey was filmed, with its beautiful gardens and fascinating Egyptian Exhibition. Finally, on our return journey, we take a nostalgic 14-mile train ride from Cheltenham to the pretty village of Broadway, often referred to as the 'Jewel of the Cotswolds', on the Gloucestershire & Warwickshire Heritage Railway, as featured in TV’s Dr Who and Father Brown.

Our base for our tour is the modern Leonardo, a stylish and comfortable 4* hotel, conveniently located just a short walk from Swindon town centre. The hotel boasts well-lit, spacious bedrooms, with en-suite bathrooms, and there is lift access to all floors. Meals are taken in the welcoming, stylish restaurant and for a relaxing after dinner drink there is a well-stocked bar.

Day 1: We depart from our local boarding points and make our way to the picturesque riverside town of Henley, “Queen of the Thames”, one of the most beautiful towns in England and location for some Midsomer Murders!! Time for lunch, in one of the many cafes, shopping in the Georgian fronted High Street, or perhaps a stroll by the river, before we visit Turville, an attractive village instantly recognisable as fictional “Dibley” and the location for Goodnight Mr. Tom. Look out for the local windmill, which was used in the filming of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Our journey continues through the Cotswolds to our hotel, where we arrive in good time for dinner.

Day 2: After breakfast today, we visit the magnificent Highclere Castle & Gardens, where the popular period drama Downton Abbey was filmed. In the castle we learn about real life at Highclere and at the same time see the Drawing Room in which Maggie Smith delivered many a withering remark to some unfortunate relation!! In addition, we have ample time to explore the beautiful gardens and discover all about the Tomb of the Egyptian Boy Pharaoh, Tutankhamun, in the fascinating Egyptian Exhibition. Ample time to explore before we return to our hotel for dinner.

Day 3: We depart from our hotel after breakfast and head for Cheltenham, where we step back in time and join the Gloucestershire & Warwickshire Heritage Railway, as featured in TV’s Dr Who and Father Brown, for a glorious 14 mile journey through the countryside to the honey-coloured stone village of Broadway, often referred to as the 'Jewel of the Cotswolds'. Ample time to take lunch in one of Broadway’s many eateries, before we travel across the rolling Cotswold hills and complete our journey home.

Includes: 2 nights half-board (dinner, bed & breakfast) in en-suite bedrooms, 1 excursion, visits on outward & return journeys, lift, accessible rooms. Fare for train (single journey). Entry to Highclere Castle, Gardens & Egyptian Exhibition.
