Boon’s Calibre Travel 2020

Elegant Paignton & the Cream of South Devon

Departs Monday 14th September 2020 for 5 days, half-board

A charming five-day break, taking in South Devon’s many treasures, based at Paignton’s excellent Redcliffe, for many years, one of our most popular hotels. Our tour includes three exciting excursions, encompassing a wide variety of places of interest, with visits to the colourful port of Dartmouth, the atmospheric Dartmoor National Park, Victorian Torquay, the fascinating House of Marbles, the historic market town of Tavistock, the Regency seaside resort of Sidmouth and beautiful Bicton Park Botanical Garden, in addition, we have free time in the historic city of Salisbury & charming Bradford-upon-Avon. As an alternative to our included excursions, there will be the opportunity to explore the area using the Paignton to Dartmouth Steam Railway and Riverboat Cruises – information will be provided (train/boat fares extra)

Our hotel is the privately owned, elegant AA 3* Redcliffe, superbly situated in the resort of Paignton, in the centre of the “English Riviera”. Set in three acres of grounds, with panoramic views across stunning Tor Bay, the hotel, formally a grand private residence, has retained many if its unique features, including a fine carved staircase, elegant lounges, and a beautiful ballroom.  Dining in the hotel’s stylish Paris Singer Restaurant, with its tasty breakfasts, delicious 3-course evening meals and fabulous coastal views, has been likened to dining aboard a luxury liner, but without any of its discomforts! All en-suite bedrooms are well equipped; there is a lift, an accessible bedroom, three ground floor rooms and some rooms have a walk-in shower.

For the energetic, the leisure complex boasts an indoor swimming pool.

Day 1: We depart from our local boarding points and head for the Southwest, stopping en-route in the charming, vibrant Wilshire town of Bradford-upon-Avon, which boasts a wealth of architectural treasures and delightful, narrow streets, lined with attractive shops and cafes. After lunch, we continue our journey to Paignton, arriving at the Redcliff in good time for dinner.

Day 2: Following breakfast today, we head eastward to Regency Sidmouth, a quiet, unspoilt seaside resort, full of character, boasting beautiful parks, beaches, small shops and a wealth of interesting architecture, all nestling beneath majestic red cliffs in the glorious Sid Valley. Our afternoon visit is to Bicton Park Botanical Gardens; described as "a delight for gardeners", Bicton is home to many rare and beautiful species, collected from around the world. Attractions include the Palm, Tropical, Arid and Temperate Houses, as well as an arboretum, a countryside museum and the Bicton Woodland Railway. Refreshments may be enjoyed in the on-site café which overlooks the stunning 300-year-old Italian Garden.

Day 3: Today, we make our way to the charming town of Tavistock, situated on the edge of Dartmoor, and astride the River Tavy. Voted the “best market town in Britain”, Tavistock boasts a lively town centre, with interesting architecture, a busy Pannier Market, and a wealth of shops & restaurants. Continuing on, we travel into the heart of the atmospheric Dartmoor National Park, with its landscape of stunning views, awe inspiring granite tors, deep wooded valleys with fast flowing rivers, rugged, wide open spaces and, of course, freely roaming Dartmoor ponies. Our visit is to the House of Marbles, a working glass and games factory, set in a historic pottery, which boasts interesting museums, a restaurant and a shop selling a wide variety of gifts and items for the home.

Day 4: After breakfast today, we have the opportunity to spend time in the delightful resort of Paignton, with its golden beaches, promenade, gardens and picturesque harbour. The more adventurous may wish to take a ride on the spectacular Paignton to Dartmouth Steam Railway. Alternatively, join our morning visit to the neighbouring Victorian town of Torquay, one of the West Country’s principal resorts, with its magnificent bay, elegant Victorian villas, iconic palm trees, busy harbour, extensive shopping areas and amazing sea views. We make a brief return to Paignton, before visiting historic Dartmouth, situated on the beautiful Dart estuary; an attractive town, with ancient narrow streets, famous for its seafaring history, and often used as a film set.

Day 5: On leaving our hotel, we make our way homeward, stopping en-route in the city of Salisbury, situated on the River Avon, with its splendid early English cathedral, crowned by the tallest spire in Britain.
