A charming four-day break, taking in South Devon’s many treasures, based in beautiful Torquay, one of the West Country’s principal resorts, with its magnificent bay, elegant Victorian villas, iconic palm trees, busy harbour, extensive shopping areas and amazing sea views. Our tour includes two exciting excursions, encompassing a wide variety of places of interest, with visits to tranquil Buckfast Abbey, historic Dartmouth, and the beautiful resorts of Babbacombe and Exmouth, we also take a relaxing boat trip along the picturesque River Exe. In addition, we have the opportunity to spend time in our resort of Torquay and we visit the traditional seaside resort of Weymouth and the historic city of Salisbury en-route.
Our hotel is the elegant AA 3* Headland, superbly situated in the resort of Torquay, in the centre of the “English Riviera”. Set in two acres of grounds, with panoramic views across stunning Tor Bay, the hotel, formally a grand private residence for the Russian Royal family, boasts stylish public areas, well-appointed en-suite bedrooms and a comprehensive leisure centre. Day 1: We depart from our local boarding points and head for the Southwest, stopping en-route in the city of Salisbury, situated on the River Avon, with its splendid early English cathedral, crowned by the tallest spire in Britain. After lunch, we continue our journey to Torquay, arriving at the Headland in good time for dinner.
Day 2: After breakfast this morning we visit Buckfastleigh and the peace and serenity of Buckfast Abbey, situated in a wooded valley in the edge of the Dartmoor National Park. Time to enjoy the magnificent Abbey Church, herb gardens, shops & café, before we head for Exmouth, reputedly the oldest seaside resort in Britain. Exmouth, situated on the picturesque east coast of Devon, boasts two miles of golden sandy beach and a colourful marina, from where we enjoy a relaxing 75 minute cruise on the calm and sheltered waters of the beautiful River Exe.
Day 3: Following breakfast, we make our way to the Devon’s picturesque South Hams Region, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, noted for its beautiful landscape, quality local food, culture and scenic beaches. Here we visit historic Dartmouth, situated on the beautiful Dart estuary; an attractive town, with ancient narrow streets, famous for its seafaring history, and often used as a film set. This afternoon we have the opportunity to either spend time at leisure in our resort of Torquay or to stay on the coach and visit neighbouring Babbacombe, a smaller resort often described as “Torbay’s Jewel in the Crown”, boasting stunning coastal views across Lyme Bay, sandy beaches, a promenade, shops and restaurants, a fascinating model village and a funicular cliff railway.
Day 4: On leaving our hotel we head along the coast and into Dorset where we visit the ever popular, traditional seaside town of Weymouth, set on a breath-taking Georgian bay, with its level promenade, fascinating harbour, sandy beaches and the usual shopping areas. After lunch, our journey continues through the beautiful New Forest and back to Essex, with comfort stops en-route.
