Boon’s Calibre Travel 2021

 The Idyllic Isle of Wight

Departs Monday 18th October 2021 for 5 days, half-board

Once again, we return to the idyllic Isle of Wight for a relaxing break at Shanklin’s excellent Bourne Hall Country Hotel. The unique, diamond-shaped island is just 23 miles wide and 14 miles long, yet has an abundance of stunning coastline, gorgeous countryside, historic buildings, awarding-winning attractions and picturebook villages.

Our hotel is the family run, 3* Bourne Hall, an elegant Country House, set in mature grounds, south of Shanklin “old village” on the Isle of Wight. Situated in an elevated position at the foot of Luccombe Downs, the hotel enjoys exquisite views across Sandown and Shanklin Bay. Originally built in the late 1860’s, said to be for one of Queen Victoria’s ladies in waiting, the “house” still retains its sense of history, whilst providing comfortable, modern accommodation. All well-appointed bedrooms have en-suite facilities and are located on ground, first and second floors (no lift). There is an indoor swimming pool.

Day 1: We depart from our local boarding points, and make our way to the South Coast, stopping en-route for refreshments & lunch, before crossing the Solent from Southampton to the Isle of Wight. Our lunchtime visit will be the cathedral city of Winchester.

Day 2: Our first day on the island takes us to Alum Bay, with its world famous cliffs, comprising 21 shades of coloured sand, and views of the iconic “Needles”. Ample time to admire the coastal scenery, and to create our own unique coloured sand souvenir, before we make our way to the historic port of Yarmouth, with its busy harbour and some of the oldest architecture on the island. Our afternoon is spent in magical NT Mottistone, a 20th-century garden, set in a sheltered valley, with shrub-filled banks, hidden pathways and colourful herbaceous borders. Mottistone surrounds an attractive Elizabethan manor house (house not open) and has been designed with a Mediterranean-style planting scheme, taking full advantage of its southerly location (admission extra, NT Members: FREE)

Day 3: Today we have the opportunity to visit Queen Victoria’s summer home, Osborne House, with its opulent and extravagant interiors, extensive grounds, with stunning views across the Solent, and Swiss Cottage – a chalet built for the royal children (admission extra, EH Members: FREE). For those who prefer not to visit Osborne House, we take a ride on the award-winning Isle of Wight Steam Railway, a 10 mile round trip through the beautiful countryside (train fare extra) and spend some time in the elegant seaside resort of Ryde, on the eastern shore of the island, with its long pier, sandy beaches, esplanade and beautiful gardens.

Day 4:  Today’s excursion takes us to the local Donkey Sanctuary (free admission), where these gentle creatures are cared for in tranquil surroundings. Continuing on, we reach Godshill, a quintessential English village, overlooked by a hill-top, medieval church, with its array of charming thatched-roofed cottages, highly detailed model village, and an attractive winding main-street, lined with traditional tearooms and shops. We spend the reminder of the day in the traditional resort of Shanklin, with its glorious golden sands, dramatic sandstone cliffs, tranquil gardens and lovely “Old Village”, with charming thatched cottages, housing a wonderful selection of gift shops and tearooms.

Day 5: On leaving our hotel we join the morning ferry from East Cowes to the mainland and commence our return journey to Essex, stopping en-route for refreshments and lunch. Our lunchtime visit will be the maritime, waterfront city of Portsmouth.

Includes: 4 nights half-board in en-suite bedrooms, porterage, ground floor rooms, leisure centre. 3 excursions & visits on outward & return journeys. Welcome reception. Ferry crossing.
